HelioSCAN: An Automated Skin Cancer Screening
Skin Cancer is one of the most common, costly, and if untreated, deadly forms of cancer. As part of the Lockheed Martin Entrepreneurship program, a group of friends and I proposed an automated detection system designed to increase diagnosis efficiency while reducing medical care costs associated with the disease.
We designed our system to exploit the raw power of cloud computing and the latest advances in image processing technologies. Using an automated network of cameras on a motorized housing, we would quickly obtain 360 degree high resolution shots of the patients skin. We would upload those images to a central and secure server, process them using algorithms designed specifically to identify cancerous lesions, and automatically send both patient and doctor a detailed report. Our system would be much less invasive than current screenings, and more accurate than infrequent checkups by non specialists.
We constructed a business model on this idea, but without proper funding we opted not to enter this highly competitive and volatile market. However, we maintain that automation will play a key role in many industries, including health care. The business plan demonstrates of the research and analysis we put into our work, and is available via the link below.
