UCUBE
Ucube is a new way to stay together. You can get a better introduction by watching our video below.
Consisting of a wearable camera and "smart" picture frame, Ucube takes the hassle out of sharing experiences. During the video, the mother's hike is captured by the wearable camera; she simply puts it on, and it begins to record a picture every minute. When she wants to share the view from the top of the hike, she simply presses the button on the clip, and the previous 5 minutes of footage are seamlessly sent to her cube. Each face of the cube corresponds to someone in her life, with one face reserved for her content. When she gets home, her side of the cube is glowing to indicate she has new content to view and share. With a few simple gestures, she can select the photo she wants to share, add an audio message, and share with anyone on her cube. When she is done, she can shake the cube to revert back to the "home" position, and tap someone else's face to view content that they have shared with her. In addition to the life-logging camera, both kids and parents will have the option of using a companion app that allows cubes to "subscribe" to social media outlets, automatically sharing photos video and status updates with family members.
Created as part of Banny Banerjee's course in design thinking, we rooted this product's design in our ethnography. We found that older working professionals are faced with a pair of difficult life transitions, adjusting from the lifestyle of a working professional to that of a content retiree, and from being an actively involved parent to a passive one as kids grow up and move out of the house. Both of these transitions equate to mroe personal time, but we discovered through our interviews that many people don't know what to do with it. Furthermore, there is an emotional "hole" created by the separation from their children, and many parents spend the better part of their days trying to connect by phone, email, skype or even social media to remotely located loved ones. Even at that, most communication is in the form of a sporadic email or phone call, and deeper emotions of day to day living are lost in just staying up to date with major events and developments.
Ucube improves emotinal connectivity by delivering an digital audio and visual messages through an intuitive physical form. It encourages emotional connections, and the message machine like functionality allows for flexibility in the scheduling of those connections. Finally, the act of sharing and talking about activities and events encourages older working professionals to rediscover their personal lives, fostering both relationships as well as personal development.
