DP1: BBQ Adventure Pack
As 1st year students in Banny Banerjee's design methodology course, we were tasked with "redesigning the barbecue experience". There were design criteria, but for the most part this was an open ended opportunity to innovate as we saw fit. We wanted to create a portable, on the go barbecue that was easily organized and ready at the drop of a hat. However, at a design review, people asked us "why?" Who was it that we were designing for, and why was it important that it be mobile and always ready?
We spoke with a variety of people, and found that the most time-deprived people who had no way to prepare a barbecue are young parents. Things are disorganized, it's a hassle, and it is much easier to order pizza and watch TV. However, most young parents used to be active outdoors in some way, and would like to return to that lifestyle. Furthermore, many young parents are keenly aware of how processed most food is, and would like to teach their kids about food preparation and cooking. The only things stopping the barbecue from being a great venue for family outdoor exploration and culinary education is 1) the organization 2) kids don't like being dragged on hikes.
So, the Lego Adventure Pack was born. The form factor says it all; it's FUN! It is designed to provide an organized space for parents and kids to interact outdoors, playing, cooking, and enjoying time together. Kids can build and play with legos on the lego-surfaced table, making food preparation part of their adventure. Parents can watch and play with their kids as the prepare the food, while also getting an opportunity to teach them about safety and preparation. Most importantly, it is a way for everyone in the family to enjoy the outdoors together.
